Why it comes up
Earlier generations rarely left a list. Sometimes the documents were lost in a move or a fire, or are simply with a relative who will not hand them over.
For Bulgarians who lived abroad it is even more common: there was something in the home village, but nobody knows exactly what, or in whose name.
What can be checked
Property. Searched against the deceased’s name, including holdings the family knows nothing about.
Agricultural land. This is the most frequent surprise. Land restored under restitution in the 1990s, which the owner never learned about and the heirs even less so. It is still there, usually farmed by someone under a lease.
Bank accounts. Through the established procedure, once the status of heir has been proved.
Company shares. The commercial register is public, and companies nobody had heard of sometimes surface there.
Vehicles and other registered items.
The other side gets checked too
Tracing assets is not complete without looking at the liabilities. There is no point finding a field if the estate carries more debt than the field is worth.
So this work runs together with the decision whether to accept the estate at all. See an estate that carries debts.
Time works against you
Land used by someone else for decades raises additional questions. Old claims run into limitation. Documents in municipal archives get harder to find with every year.
That does not mean it is too late. It means this is not a conversation for next year.
If you are abroad
All of this is done without you. It runs through registers and archives, not through presence. All that is needed is a power of attorney and a certificate of heirs.
What I will need
The name of the deceased, the date of death, the last address and the place of birth. Whatever the family remembers, even if it is vague: names of villages, approximate years, stories about “grandfather’s field”. Those are exactly what tells us where to look.
