Enforcement and debt

You find out about a Bulgarian debt years after it arose. Usually when you try to sell something, and the sale will not complete.

3 matters Updated 25 August 2026 Jurisdiction: Bulgaria

Unpaid local taxes on a property nobody visited. A dormant company that kept accruing obligations. An old loan that has grown several times over. Or enforcement proceedings that ran their course while the letters went to an address you left long ago.

Some of these debts are owed. Some are not, because they are time-barred or because the proceedings were conducted improperly. The difference shows after checking, not from how it feels.

What this covers

Defence against the actions of a private enforcement agent. Challenging specific enforcement steps. Objections in order-for-payment proceedings, where the period is short. Limitation of old debts. Negotiating a repayment schedule. Recovering a debt where you are the creditor.

When to instruct a lawyer

On the day you receive anything from a court or an enforcement agent. The periods here are among the shortest in Bulgarian law, and a missed deadline is not restored.

One thing people get wrong

They assume an old debt has lapsed on its own. Limitation does not operate automatically. It has to be raised, in the proper way and at the proper moment.

So an old Bulgarian debt is not ignored. It is checked.
