This page is here so that you know what follows. It does not replace a conversation.

What this covers

Defence in pre-trial proceedings, from the first questioning onwards. Defence at trial. Detention and restrictive measures. Representation of victims of crime. Road traffic offences. Customs and border matters, which arise regularly at the crossings into Turkey. European Arrest Warrant and extradition.

When to instruct a lawyer

Before the first questioning, not after it. What is said at the beginning stays on the file and is used until the end.

You have the right to a lawyer from the moment of detention, and to an interpreter if you do not speak Bulgarian. Neither right is a formality, and you do not have to justify asking for either.

One thing people get wrong

They assume that having done nothing wrong, an explanation will sort it out, and that asking for a lawyer looks like guilt.

It does not. It means you understand the procedure. People with nothing to do with the matter regularly damage their own position through well-meant explanations given at the wrong moment, in a language they only partly follow.
